Literary and Cultural Tour of North & West Kerry

Calling all Book Lovers...

Golden Ireland is delighted to announce details of a new Literary & Cultural Tour in The Kingdom. Kerry has a rich literary heritage, and has produced many famous writers and poets, including Brendan Kennelly, Seán McCarthy, Bryan McMahon, George Fitzmaurice, , Maurice Walsh, Sigerson Clifford, Muiris Ó Súilleabhháin, and of course Peig Sayers. No other part of Ireland has ever produced as many world-class writers and storytellers.

Join us on an exciting literary and cultural journey this September, which touches on the lives of Kerry's great storytellers, whilst enjoying the magnificent scenery of the Kingdom of Kerry.

Sunday, 22nd September: Arrive in Tralee, famous for its Roses.
Stay in the four star Ashe Hotel, conveniently located in the heart of this historic and vibrant town, and only minutes from the train and bus station.
Dinner followed by Show in Siamsa Tíre, the national folk theatre of Ireland.

Monday, 23rd September - depart by coach to the Heritage Town of Listowel, The Literary Capital of Ireland.

Interactive Tour of Seanachaí, Kerry Writer's Museum, a visitor attraction & heritage centre in the historic Town of Listowel. Be immersed in the universes of John B. Keane (The Field), Bryan MacMahon, Brendan Kennelly, Maurice Walsh (The Quiet Man) and George Fitzmaurice in a dizzying swirl of words. Get to know them intimately and learn how the local landscape, folklore, and colourful characters of North Kerry brought their amazing stories to life.

Tour followed by tea/coffe & scones

Talk by author and poet, Gabriel Fitzmaurice
Deeply rooted in the literary tradition of North Kerry, Gabriel Fitzmaurice is a poet, broadcaster, writer, translator, singer and raconteur. He was born in 1952, in the village of Moyvane, Co Kerry where he still lives. For more than three decades, he taught and later served as principal at his local national school but is now happily retired. He has been called “poetry’s answer to John B Keane” (Books Ireland) and his poems have been described as “comparable to Burns for their insight and lyricism” (The Irish Times ).

Lunch, followed by free time in Listowel.

Transfer back to Tralee for dinner and evening entertainment in Alfie's Lounge.

Tuesday, 24th September

Your coach awaits to whisk you away to the enchantment of The Dingle Peninsula and The Slea Head Drive.

Stop in Ionad an Bhlascaoid Mhóir (The Blasket Centre) in Dún Chaoin on the tip of The Dingle Peninsula. Enjoy a tour of this fascinating heritage centre/museum that honours the unique community who lived on the remote Blasket Islands until their evacuation in 1953. The Blasket Centre tells the story of island life, subsistence fishing and farming, traditional life including modes of work and transport, home life, housing and entertainment. The Centre details the community’s struggle for existence, their language and culture, and the extraordinary literary legacy they left behind- classics such as ‘The Islandman’, ‘Twenty Years A-Growing’ and ‘Peig’.

Arrive back in Dingle for some free time, which might include a visit to An Café Literatha or The Dingle Bookshop.

Dinner in local seafood Restaurant followed by Talk & Q&A with best-selling author, Felicity Hayes-McCoy.

Felicity Hayes-McCoy is the Irish author of the successful 'Finfarran' novels, published by Hachette Books Irl and Harper Collins in The US. She is married to the English writer and opera director, Wilf Judd. They work and live in West Kerry and inner-city London and together they wrote Dingle And Its Hinterland: People, Places and Heritage, a guide to the western end of Ireland's Dingle Peninsula. Felicity has written television dramas, radio soap operas, features, documentaries, plays and screenplays, as well as books on fairytales, myths and legends.

Coach transfer back to Tralee
