Severe Insomnia

I've had severe insomnia for more than 20 years, usually getting no more than 3 hours sleep a night. I've tried everything from anti-depressants to hypnotheraphy and herbal remedies - is there any hope? One GP told me older people don't need much sleep, but I certainly need more.

Hi Michael

I've heard that age produces a natural change in sleep patterns - with less night sleep and more day sleep. Perhaps you may need to catch up on sleep by taking a daytime nap. I too suffer from insomnia and usually go for a lie down in the afternoon. I'm up at dawn and usually just get up and do something useful like make a loaf of bread or go for a walk. I would love to be able to sleep on for hours now that I'm retired but I've just learnt to accept my situation as it is.
