Anybody else worried?

I'm over 65 so think we fall into the category of high risk? My daughter is also pregnant and has a little one under 2 so am worried for them also. Having said that I'm not sure if much can be done to avoid it. I noticed there was no sign of peace at mass yesterday and some of my friends have been saying that it's best to avoid crowds etc. However, I think this might be a little bit extreme - I mean do we all just stay in and hope that the flu won't come to us? Just wondering what other people think?

I would like to know how can a doctor determine if you have the swine flu as opposed to the ordinary flu. The symptoms are really much the same. Is there any key difference? If this swine flu gets worse how will we really know who has been in contact with the swine flu or not

I work in pharmacy and it would really mean a lot if people who think they are infected with swine flu rang their GP rather then coming into surgeries and pharmacies with the virus and spreading

I believe that GP's only take swabs from high risk people and then send them to the lab. Because there is such demand it is taking days for results to come back which is worrying as swine flu should be treated within 48 hours. I think there should be better information available, i.e. let people know what the symptoms are, what treatments are available etc. It seems that there is a lot of talk going on but nobody really seems to be in charge and the situation changes by the week.

I agree that there is a lack of information being made available which results then in a lot of panic etc Having said that I think there is a public campaign being launched today so that may help the situation.

With the arrival of the vaccine, hopefully it's only a matter of time before high risk people are vaccinated - I assume that older people will be in this category?
Also does anybody know when the flu vaccine will become available?

I think the flu vaccine will be available in the next few weeks.
With regards to the vaccine for swine flu, I'm not so sure I would be first in line to avail of it - I would not put my faith in a vaccine that hasn't been proven yet. Maybe I don't know enough about it but I for one would be cautious about getting it.

I too would have concerns about the vaccine as does a doctor friend of mone. I also read that up to half of family doctors in the UK do not want to be vaccinated against swine flu. More than two thirds of those who will turn the jab down believe it has not been tested enough. Most also believe the flu has turned out to be so mild in the vast majority of cases that the vaccine is not needed.
Of those who said they did not want to jab, 71 per cent said it was because of safety concerns. Yet according to the Irish Independent yesterday the two drug companies supplying over seven million doses of the swine flu vaccine here in Ireland will not be liable for any compensation claims if anyone suffers serious complications, it was confirmed yesterday.
Officials from the Department of Health said it had granted indemnity to the two companies, which would leave the State picking up the bill in the event of anyone being damaged by the vaccine. Hard to believe isn't it.
