Unfortunately I have recently noticed that I am not hearing the TV very well and if I am in a crowded situation where 2 or 3 people are talking, I find it difficult to hear. I'm 65 years old. Just wondering where I should go to have my hearing checked - is the GP the 1st port of call? Thanks.

Hi Bernadine
Yes I think you should go to your GP to begin with just to rule out that it's not wax in your ear or some other medical condition. I was hoping myself I had a build up of wax but this was not the case and my Doctor referred me to an ENT specialist who organised a special hearing test. I was then provided with a hearing aid for one ear. You could also attend a special hearing aid centre. I think the Department of Social Welfare provides a grant towards the purchase of hearing aids but the hearing aid centre must be approved by them. Hearing aids are also tax deductable - I got quite a discount on mine through my husbands PRSI contributions. Hope this helps.

I think it's very important to shop around if you are buying a hearing aid and to ask for recommendations. Shocking to hear of the amount of money Hidden Hearing are charging as featured on the Joe Duffy Show during the week - anything from €4,000 - €8,000.

Hi Bernadine, I just want to add my voice to Michael's... be very careful where you get your hearing aid. My friend paid 6,500 euro for his aid about 2 years ago and it has been most unsatisfactory. I would ask around other people and try to get a recommendation from someone who has a hearing aid that is working well. I know it would'nt solve all your problems, but you can now get cordless headphones that you can use for the tv. They may be of help to you. Good Luck shopping around!
