I believe that mammograms can be quite painful. Is this true? I am due to have my first mammogram in August and am a bit worried about it. Are there side effects?

I have one every 2 years and yes it can be a bit uncomfortable but I count to 10 and it's over. I have an aunt who was diagnosed with cancer after her first screening even though she didn't have a noticeable lump - self examination possibly wouldn't have found the lump for some time. She had a mastectomy and chemo and has been clear now for 7 years. I had another friend who wouldn't go to get screened because the 1st one she had was painful. She died from breast cancer 3 years ago.

I really think it's so important to go. You might feel a little uncomfortable for a few minutes but think of the benefits - it could save your life.
