How do you keep fit?

Just wondering how people keep fit? I walk a lot but my son tells me walking doesn't get my heart rate up and I should do something more physical. What do others think?

You should do some steep hillwalking. That'll get it going.

I do pitch and putt and love it. It's also very sociable as you get to meet lots of people, go away on trips etc. Apart from that I think regular exercise is the key - so if you walk say for 30 minutes every day you will build up your fitness. Dont think you need to do anything too strenous to get fit.

Hi Richard, how fast do you you walk? If you can walk at a brisk pace up a slight hill without increasing your breathing rate, you are quite fit, (assuming you are over 55)  and if you can keep it up for an hour or so, that's as much as you need to stay reasonably fit. If you feel you need to do more then it's hard to beat swimming, it's the best exercise ever.

Thanks for your replies.

I suppose I am reasonably fit in that I wouldn't be out of breath going up a hill - woud be a bit tired, however, after walking for an hour and yes I am over 55. I like the idea of exercising with other people so something like pitch and putt appeals. I've never played before, however, so would be like a fish out of water. If anyone else has suggestions or maybe how to join a walking group etc., would appreciate it. I live in Dublin. Thanks.

Hi Richard

There are lots of walking groups in Dublin. I used to go with an Oige years ago at the weekends. It's not just for young people - in fact we were mostly people 50+. The Irish Heart Foundation have a list of walking groups in Dub that you could check out:

Time to dig out the walking shoes!
