Founded in 1963, the Irish Cancer Society is Ireland's national charity for cancer care. The mission of the Society is to play a vital role in achieving world-class cancer services in Ireland, to ensure fewer people get cancer and those that do have better outcomes. Our goals for the next five years are focused around prevention, early detection and fighting cancer with three programme areas to achieve them: research, advocacy and cancer services.
In the cancer services area, we provide a range of free nationwide patient care services in community and hospital settings. Our Cancer Information Service (which comprises the National Cancer Helpline and Action Breast and Prostate Cancer Helplines) and National Smokers Quitline respond to over 20,000 enquiries annually. We fund Homecare Palliative Care Teams which look after people during the day and our night nurses look after people at the advanced stage of their cancer illness. Our hospital based cancer liaison nurses provide an important link between the patient and other healthcare professionals during the cancer journey, giving vital information and support.
The Society advocates for sound public health and cancer policy and provides accurate and current information on cancer to the public. Through our research division, the Irish Cancer Society is the largest voluntary funder of cancer research in Ireland.
