What is Age Action?
Age Action is the national charity for ageing and older people. Our vision is to make Ireland the best place in which to grow older. We are committed to fighting discrimination and promoting positive ageing and securing high quality services for all older people.
Founded in 1992, it has almost 1,800 members. Our aims are to change attitudes and to tackle ageism in all forms. We have regional offices at Age Action West, Age Action North East, Age Action South East and Age Action North Dublin with plans to establish regional centres around the country.
What Age Action Ireland Does
Age Action Ireland follows a community development approach to its work in that its central goal is the empowerment of older people and it does this through the following services and initiatives:
- Advocacy by and for older people;
- Adult Education Project, establishing and supporting local U3A groups;
- Carers Support Project, training and support for family carers;
- Care and Repair Programmes in Dublin and Galway, and locations across the country;
- Getting Started Computer Training for older people;
- Lobbying Government on all issues in relation to older people;
- Library and Information Service;
- Monthly magazine Ageing Matters in Ireland circulated to over 3,000 people in Ireland and abroad;
- Operates five charity shops (two in Dublin, one in Galway, one in Castlebar and one in Monaghan) a vital source of funding for the organisation;
- Conducts reminiscence and lifelong learning sessions with older people in Day Care Centres, nursing homes and other older people’s groups;
- Irish and French classes to older people in the West of Ireland.
